Walt Disney called Disneyland “the happiest place on earth”. And it is. The idea of a themed park for kids and adults alike to enjoy came to Walt while watching his daughter on the merry-go-around in Los Angeles’s Griffith Park. He wanted to create a place that both kids and adults could enjoy.
There is a lot of Walt in Disneyland. This is the only park he saw to completion (Disneyland opened in 1955 and Walt passed away in 1966. Walt Disney World opened in 1971). The park bench that Walt sat on in Griffith Park is on display at The Disneyland Story on Main Street. Also,Walt had a special apartment constructed on the second floor of the Main Street Firehouse so he could watch the guests enjoying his new park.
In the 60 years since Disneyland opened, Disneyland has expanded to two theme parks, three hotels and a Downtown Disney district. Millions of guests each year realize that Disneyland is the happiest place on earth.
